Type-writer is a multi-channel sound work that has been designed as a performance and an interactive installation. It is the first in a series of pieces which explore the musical and theatrical potential of a site-specific array of loudspeakers. In this work, the audience seating of the Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall is used as a stage for an array of 26 loudspeakers, arranged into three rows which represent the keys of a QWERTY keyboard. Sampled sounds controlled by the performer may be diffused to each loudspeaker using a computer keyboard as a familiar and intuitive device. Different modes of interaction are available in each performance to extend the functionality of the keyboard as a tool for performance and composition.
