The Zarzuela, a spanish tradition

Somebody with knowledge of West End musicals, operetta or opera will find some aspects of familiarity in Zarzuela, the Spanish popular opera which reached its definitive form in the 19th century as a mixture of instrumental music, singing, dancing.

Instituto Cervantes in Leeds, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, presents Tribute to La Zarzuela, a programme of classic Zarzuela repertoire by composers including Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Nin and Amadeo Vives, performed by the award-winning soprano Laura Alonso Padín and the famous pianist and composer Manuel Valencia Segarra.

Laura Padin is a regular performer in internationally renowned theatres and concert halls including the Auditorium Rishon LeZion (Israel), the Lincoln Center in New York, Teatro Bellas Artes in Mexico, Philharmonie of Cologne, Berlin and Essen, Laeiszhalle of Hamburg, Konzerthaus of Berlin, Karlsruhe and Dortmund, Kuppel Saal of Hanover, Maestranza of Seville, Herodes Atticus of Athens, Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Utrecht Auditorium, Los Angeles Auditorium (U.S.), Palau de Valencia and Barcelona, amongst many others.
