Terra Invisus premieres 'I no longer want to listen', a new work by Ed Cooper. The programme will also feature pieces by Leeds alumni James M. Creed and Joy Ingle, alongside other compositions featured on Terra Invisus' debut album 'Visions', released in April 2024. Ed Cooper is a composer and writer based in Leeds, UK. His compositional practice takes many forms, from solo repertoire to performance-installations, large-scale choral works to electroacoustic pieces. These are often disquiet in character, frequently comprising heartbeats, field recordings, and distant, half-forgotten melodies. As such, he invites disruptions between interiority to exteriority in his music, thinking of bodies as existing as and at their own thresholds. He is currently studying a PhD at the University of Leeds, supervised by Scott McLaughlin and Martin Iddon; this is fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, through the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities.
Terra Invisus is a contemporary music trio, dedicated to pushing musical and sonic boundaries through free improvisation, and the performance of new commissions and contemporary works. Comprising Milda Vitartaite (piano), Alex Lyon (clarinets), and Rebecca Burden (cello), they explore the combination of their diverse musical styles to curate unique live performances and collaborations.
Recent highlights include a performance of the chamber opera ‘Outlier’ by Josh Kaye at Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival 2022. Terra Invisus is a recipient of Colin Blythe Bursary and the winner of Gladys Puttick improvisation competition 2022 at Trinity Laban.
Alex Lyon is an eclectic, cross-genre musician and composer based in South East London, specializing in contemporary music and free improvisation on clarinet and bass clarinet. Her solo work blends minimalism and traditional music influences with extended clarinet technique.
She is an adept collaborator and improviser across contemporary classical, free jazz, and traditional music, shaped by her studies at Sheffield University and Trinity Laban Conservatoire. She has performed at many venues across the UK, such as Kings Place, Woolwich Works, and the Brighton Dome with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a member of the award-winning global folk collective, Mishra, Alex first featured on their second album, "Reclaim" (2021), and since then has performed at festivals such as Celtic Connections, and Cambridge Folk Festival, as a clarinettist and vocalist. She also regularly performs and composes with Indian Classical vocalist, Deepa Shakthi.
In the contemporary classical music scene, Alex works alongside many composers, premiering new works regularly both as a soloist and a member of contemporary classical trio, Terra Invisus.
Rebecca Burden is a cellist based in South East London. She is a member of orchestras and ensembles such as London Contemporary Orchestra, London Choral Sinfonia, and Standard Issue.
As well as an excellent classical cellist, Rebecca also considers herself a collaborative composer, working closely alongside composers to create new art and experiences for diverse audiences. Her practice has taken her from clubs, abandoned offices and hotels frequented by witches, to the Barbican, the Athens Acropolis and Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. She recently graduated from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where she was awarded the Montague Cleeve and Headley Trust scholarship.
Milda Vitartaite is a Lithuanian pianist and composer. Having started piano and composition lessons at the age of 12, Milda gained her Master’s Degree in Piano Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, UK, under the guidance of Douglas Finch, where she also had opportunities to shape her artistic expression with such celebrated artists as Pascal Roge and Martino Tirimo.
In recent years, Milda has emerged on the contemporary music scene as a dynamic and fervent interpreter of modern piano repertoire with a passion for bringing new works to the forefront of the classical music scene. Her commitment to new music led to numerous collaborations with emerging composers, premiering both chamber and solo pieces written for her.
Milda’s national debut as a composer came with the dance theatre work 'Plastic Bag Odyssey', which enjoyed acclaim in various Lithuanian festivals during 2020 and 2021. Since then, Milda’s works have been performed in different venues across London, including The New Lights Contemporary Piano Festival 2023.
