Rolf Hind studied piano and composition at the Royal College of Music in London and in Los Angeles. For fifteen years he worked principally as a pianist, collaborating with composers including Messiaen, Berio, Ligeti, Kurtág, Tan Dun, John Adams, Thomas Adès and George Benjamin, and premiering hundreds of new works worldwide. He returned to composition in 2000, inspired particularly by India, whose languages, philosophy, landscapes and culture inform much of his music. His works include the piano concerto Maya-Sesha, Lost in Thought, a four-hour ‘mindfulness opera’, The Secret Names, and Sky In A Small Cage, his opera about the poet Sufi Rumi.
