Robert Schumann - Märchenbilder (Fairy Tales) op 113, for viola and piano
Martin Iddon - Limnades, for viola, marimba and piano
Luciano Berio - Naturale (on Sicilian folk songs) for viola, percussion and tape
Ivor Novello-winning composer Martin Iddon’s limnades was written for Pixels Ensemble’s appearance in the University of Liverpool’s 2015 Open Circuit Festival and here is performed in a new instrumentation. Robert Schumann’s set of evocative Fairy Tales unleashes the narrative power of the viola; and in Luciano Berio’s Naturale viola and percussion combine to reflect and commentate on the composer’s recording of authentic Sicilian folk song.

Pixels Ensemble
Pixels Ensemble is a versatile chamber music group with a shared passion for performing the finest repertoire, from the classical period to the present day. Its players are all established soloists, chamber musicians, recording artists, orchestral principals and explorers of contemporary music. Formed in 2016 by pianist and director Ian Buckle, the group appears in a wide range of line-ups and combinations, lending itself to innovative programming and enabling huge variety within individual concerts. Recent engagements include appearances at Liverpool Philharmonic, the Holywell Music Room in Oxford and Conway Hall in London; and the group enjoys a close association with the Universities of Leeds and Liverpool.
