The University of Leeds Gamelan Ensemble will perform a collection of tradition Javanese music and world premieres of new compositions on the School’s Javanese gamelan, (names according to tradition The Golden Thread), which came to Leeds six years ago from Java. The instruments – bronze gongs and metallophones, drums and a wood xylophone – were hand-forged and hand-carved in the court city of Surakarta in Central Java. The ensemble is directed by Emily Crossland (MA York), composer and community musician, who has worked with Gamelan specialist Neil Sorrell at the University of York.
