Winterreise

Date
Date
Saturday 21 February 2015, 7.30pm - 9.30pm

Philip Smith (baritone) James Cheung (piano)

Come to the Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall on a mid-Winter’s evening to experience an atmospheric “Winter Journey”. Baritone Philip Smith and pianist James Cheung team up to perform one of the most poignant of Schubert’s song cycles, Winterreise D 911. Wilhelm Müller’s poetry inspired Schubert to write some of his most telling and extraordinary songs, fully displaying his masterful grasp of vivid picture painting in music. James has appeared in festivals and concerts around the world working with some of the most exciting artists today including Christian Gerhaher, Ian Bostridge and Joan Rodgers. Philip is an alumnus of University of Leeds and is familiar face at the Clothworkers Concert Hall. He enjoys a busy operatic and recital career across Europe and further afield. Philip and James have worked together for several years since meeting in Aldeburgh on the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme where they studied Schumann, Wolf and Strauss. This is their latest collaboration in a series of concerts in which they are exploring Schubert’s great song cycles.
