Henry Purcell’s King Arthur, or The British Worthy (Z. 628) – text by John Dryden.
Leeds Baroque Choir and Orchestra directed by Peter Holman
This five act ‘semi-opera’ is based, loosely, on the history of King Arthur’s battles between the Britons and the Saxons and his attempts to rescue his betrothed – the blind princess Emmeline. The score contains some of Purcell’s most engaging and dramatic music (including the famous ‘Frost scene’ and the concluding chaconne) and, for this concert version, the story is re-told in a special written narration.
