JOB DESCRIPTION

The School of Music at the University of Leeds is looking to appoint an Ensemble in Residence for the duration of the 2023-24 academic year. The post has been funded by Friends of University Art and Music (FUAM) and the University of Leeds International Concert Series. The Ensemble in Residence will play a prominent role in the School of Music, working with students and performing high-profile concerts within the Concert Series.

The Ensemble in Residence will deliver a diverse series of engaging and informative events for students, appealing to School of Music students with an array of musical interests and studying a wide variety of academic disciplines. Events may include performance masterclasses, workshops, composer reading sessions and career development sessions. The ensemble will also perform interesting and innovatively programmed concerts within the University’s Concert Series.

The Ensemble in Residence will receive remuneration of £8,000. Additionally, ensembles will have access to high quality studio and recording equipment and other facilities.  We would be glad to discuss other support as required to make the residency a success.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The School of Music is one of the largest music departments in the UK, welcoming undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers from across the world every year. The School has over 25 academic members of staff with a wide range of specialisms and interests including musicology, performance, composition, theory, notation, music technology, aesthetics, analysis, and music psychology. We currently run five undergraduate programmes, seven taught postgraduate programmes, and offer a range of research degrees, including PhD, MA by Research and MPhil.

The School of Music has a strong interdisciplinary ethos and actively collaborates with other schools in the University to enhance teaching and research, as well as with other universities and industries around the world. In 2017, the School of Music was awarded the prestigious All-Steinway status enriching the experience of our students and attracting world-class performers and academics. The School and University work in partnership with numerous cultural external organisations, including the Leeds International Piano Competition and Opera North.

 

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS INTERNATIONAL CONCERT SERIES

The University of Leeds International Concert Series engages audiences with a yearly programme of approximately 50 concerts performed by high-calibre musicians from the international stage, local performers and collaborators, and student musicians. The Series enriches the cultural life of the city of Leeds, with diverse programmes and high quality performance. Regular collaboration with leading arts institutions in Leeds facilitates the sharing of musical and creative ideas, further strengthening our cultural offering to the city and wider region. Concerts take place in the 250 seat Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, which in equipped with two Steinway D pianos, a chamber organ, and a range of technical facilities. The Concert Series also delivers a series of performance masterclasses for students; and CONCERTS+, a programme of concert-related activity, including informal performance, blogs, student Open Mic Nights, events to support the work of composition and music technology students, workshops, and industry sessions.

 

ABOUT FUAM

Founded in 1989, Friends of University Art and Music (FUAM) provides support to the University's Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery and the University of Leeds International Concert Series. FUAM regularly provides funds to assist in the purchase of works for the University art collection, and sponsors high profile concerts in the Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall. Members of FUAM enjoy a programme of lectures, pre-exhibition talks, special recitals and events on campus, and visits to concerts, major galleries and collections further afield.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications should include:

  1. A proposal (no more than two pages) detailing:
    • what the ensemble could offer over the course of the residency (October 2023 – May 2024)
    • how the ensemble could contribute to the teaching and research activities within the School of Music
    • a budget breakdown.
  2. Example concert programmes (50 minutes and 90 minutes in length).
  3. An ensemble biography outlining the expertise and experience of the group.
  4. Examples (preferably online links) of recordings/performances by the ensemble.
