Musicians of Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim Remembered.

Des Hurley (fiddle) Paul Daly (wooden flute) Chris O’Malley (piano)

Today, Irish music is a well-known genre. In the 1920’s the emerging recording industry in America recognised that there was a market for music representing migrants arriving in the country. Today we focus on a number of musicians from the counties of Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim in the west of Ireland who made recordings at this time which were hugely popular both in America and back in Ireland. Their significance and individual regional and stylistic influence complimenting a re-emergence of Irish traditional music remains hugely respected and acknowledged within the local communities across the west of Ireland.

The concert will feature a discussion with the Manchester based flute player Paul Daly, originally from Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon and a slideshow of memorials to musicians in this area.
