Light Night: Discover Live Coding: Innovation in Music

Date
Date
Friday 5 October 2018, 6.00pm - 9.00pm

The Yorkshire Programming Ensemble with Innocent Granger

Ryan Kirkbride, Laurie Johnson, Lucy Cheesman (T.Y.P.E.) and laptop-instrumentalist, Innocent Granger, join forces to create a very special Light Night Leeds 2018 experience, on-campus.

With research and performance backgrounds in music, computer science, electronics, and sound installations, School of Music alumni Ryan Kirkbride and Laurie Johnson, together with Lucy Cheesman and Innocent Granger, will reprise elements of April’s well-received #AlgoraveAssembly live coding day (part of Leeds Digital Festival 2018).

Responding to LightNight 2018 themes of innovation and progress, the School’s Clothworkers Bar and Centenary Concert Hall will be transformed for an evening of electrifying, body-shaking sounds and incredible, hypnotic visuals, as #DiscoverLiveCoding presents live coding to a new audience of families and young adults.

There will be opportunities throughout the evening to immerse yourself in live coding activity, take your pick from: one-on-one tuition (in coding visuals software); watch a video introducing live coding and it’s philosophy; take your turn at the controls alongside laptop performers on the Foyer stage; share your coding creation online - live - via the School’s streaming technology; experience the power of the School’s awesome Genelec PA system and really get to appreciate the live coding format, projected onto the Concert Hall’s giant 8m screen.

Free live-coding themed non-alcoholic cocktails and a club atmosphere will work all of your senses on this illuminating journey through sound, light and technology.

NB [1] Photography and filming as part of on-the-night livestreaming will be taking place throughout the evening [2] Participation is entirely voluntary - spectators very welcome.
