Leeds Finalist’s Platform

Friday 6 February 2015, 1.05pm - 1.55pm

Alexander Chisholm-Loxley (piano)

The first half of this concert will be devoted to three of the most gifted piano composers; Chopin, Rachmaninov and Liszt. The nineteenth century represents the golden age of piano music, where expressivity and virtuosity were combined to create an intensely passionate style. Alexander will dedicate the second half of his programme to more contemporary music, including one of his own compositions, A Piece for Winter. Comprised of two parts, this descriptive work attempts to portray a cold, nostalgic atmosphere. Finally, the concert will be concluded with Sonata 2 The Fire Sermon by
Einojuhani Rautavaara, born in 1928.

Born in 1991, Alexander is a final year BA Music student at the University of Leeds. A finalist in the 2015 LUUMS piano competition, he currently studies piano performance with Ian Buckle. Also a passionate singer, he is a continuing member of both The Clothworkers Consort of Leeds and LUUMS Chamber Choir. Beyond performance, Alexander has a deep interest in composition and early English choral music. He is also a keen chess player and champion longbow archer, having won the Wand World Championship in 2007.
